Thanks for sharing! By 'dodgy connection', do you mean a loose wire? Where should I be looking on the steering wheel? Any tips on accessing those connections safely?

In my Peugeot, it was the connector block behind the steering wheel airbag. Accessing it safely requires disconnecting the battery and knowing how to handle airbags. Since yours is a Volvo, it's best to get it properly diagnosed. Based on the error code, maybe take it to a workshop before something gets damaged.

Okay, that makes sense. I took it to the workshop and you were right. It was a defective plug connection. The repair cost me 95€, thanks again!

Sounds familiar. My old Peugeot 307 had a similar issue, and it turned out to be a dodgy connection in the steering wheel controls. Have you checked the cable and plug connections? Maybe wiggle them and see if anything changes.
