C70 Transmission Sensor Error

My 2006 Volvo C70 with a gasoline engine has an engine warning light and transmission warning light on. It has about 84623 km. Diagnostic showed an error code for the transmission oil temperature sensor. The gearbox seems to be in emergency mode, with slippage, unclean shifting, and grinding. Could a low gearbox oil level be the cause?

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 307 (diesel). Engine light came on, and the gears felt like they were fighting each other. I'm no expert, but could also be just a faulty sensor throwing everything off? Did you check the transmission oil level? That's where I started.

Thanks. Could you explain how to check the transmission oil level? I want to make sure I do it right, since I'm not that familiar with car maintenance.

Well, on the Peugeot, there was a dipstick for the transmission fluid, just like the engine oil. Check your Volvo's manual; it should show you where it is and how to check the level. Honestly, though, if it's grinding, it might be best to get it checked by a workshop. Could save you bigger problems later.

Thanks for the advice. I consulted a technician. The transmission oil level was low, causing the sensor to give bad readings. A refill and sensor replacement fixed it. The total cost was 365€.
