Thanks for sharing your experience. I actually dealt with almost identical transmission sensor problems on my VW last winter. The shift lock symptoms started the same way before the transmission failure got worse. The mechanic found corroded wiring in the gear linkage assembly causing false readings. Did you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing? Also curious if youve had any other transmission issues pop up since getting it fixed? Mine has been running smooth but I keep a close eye on the shifter feel just in case.

Since getting the automatic transmission repaired last month, everything has been working perfectly. The mechanic identified the root cause as a defective control unit that was causing the shift lock and neutral position issues. Total repair costs came to 1000€, which included diagnostic work and replacing the faulty transmission control module. The transmission repair has completely resolved the parking position problems and loose shifter symptoms. The gear linkage now engages smoothly in all positions with no more error codes or warning lights. Having a properly functioning transmission makes such a difference in how the car drives. Have not experienced any new transmission issues since the fix. Regular maintenance and watching for early warning signs like unusual shifting behavior is still important though. The mechanic mentioned these control units can fail due to age regardless of mileage, so catching problems early is key.

Thanks for the helpful advice. Just got back from the shop after getting my Caddy checked out. Found out the transmission control module was faulty, causing those gear shifter problems. Really similar to what others mentioned here. The mechanic diagnosed multiple issues with the shift lock system and discovered damaged wiring in the transmission sensor array. Labor and parts ended up costing 1400€ total, but worth it to have everything working properly again. They also performed a full transmission diagnostic to ensure no other underlying problems. Car is shifting perfectly now, no more loose feeling in neutral position and the parking lock engages firmly. Such a relief to have it sorted before any major transmission failure occurred. Will definitely keep monitoring for any unusual shifting behavior, but feeling confident the root cause has been fixed. Recent repair experience was much better than my last shop visit. Mechanic took time to explain all the transmission issues and showed me the damaged components. Glad I got it addressed quickly based on the advice here.

Had similar transmission failure symptoms on my 98 Caddy. The gear linkage was misaligned, causing transmission sensor errors and preventing proper engagement in neutral position. Initially thought it was the park brake system, but diagnostic revealed more complex issues with the control module. First step should be reading those error codes, they will point to specific transmission sensor problems. In my case, the transmission control unit was defective and needed replacement. This was a serious repair job requiring specialized equipment. The loose shifter feeling often indicates worn shifter bushings or a damaged gear selector mechanism. These symptoms match what happened before my transmission completely failed to engage. Common issues with this model series include: Faulty transmission position sensors, Control unit electrical problems, Worn shift linkage components, Park lock mechanism failures Recommend getting those codes read first before driving further. The low mileage suggests possible electrical rather than mechanical wear issues, but the symptoms point to potential transmission control system problems that need immediate attention.
