Caliber's Low Oil Pressure Warning Signals Engine Danger

Thanks for the detailed reply. My Caliber has 82839 KM and the last full service with oil change was done 3 months ago. The noise is definitely worse at idle and the oil pressure gauge drops significantly when the engine is warm. Just checked the oil again and noticed some metallic particles in it, which is quite concerning. Based on your experience, it does sound like my oil pump is failing. Good call on getting it fixed quickly, I will stop driving it and have it towed to the shop tomorrow. Really hoping to avoid major engine damage from low oil pressure or oil pump failure. Would you recommend doing a full engine flush along with the new oil pump installation to clear out any metal debris? The repair cost seems reasonable considering the potential alternative of engine bearing damage.

Thanks for those additional details. Based on what you described, metallic particles in the oil and low pressure at idle, your situation mirrors mine exactly. The oil pressure sensor readings from my repair showed dangerously low pressure levels, especially when warm. The metallic particles you found are a serious warning sign that the low oil pressure is already affecting engine components. Getting it towed is definitely the right call. When my oil pump failed, the mechanic strongly recommended a complete engine flush to remove all metal particles from the oil system. This process added about 120€ to my total repair cost but was essential to prevent future bearing damage. During my repair, they also replaced the oil pressure sensor since oil contamination can affect its accuracy. The complete service included: New oil pump assembly, Engine flush, Fresh engine oil and filter, New oil pressure sensor, System inspection for bearing wear Since having this done, my oil pressure has remained stable and those concerning mechanical noises completely disappeared. Make sure your mechanic checks the main bearings while they have things apart, catching any early wear now could save significant repairs later. Let us know how the repair goes. Given the similar symptoms and mileage, your repair costs should be in the same range as mine.

Thanks for sharing those details. The situation sounds almost identical to what you described, metallic particles in my oil and the oil pressure gauge showing concerning drops at idle. After seeing your successful repair outcome, I will definitely get my Caliber towed to avoid risking further engine bearing damage. The metallic debris in the oil is particularly worrying, suggesting the oil pump failure is already impacting engine components. Your repair cost of 755€ plus 120€ for the engine flush seems reasonable considering what was included. I will request the same complete service package, new oil pump, full system flush, fresh oil filter, and oil pressure sensor replacement. Having them inspect the bearings while everything is apart makes good sense too. Really appreciate you sharing your experience in such detail. It helped confirm my suspicions about the oil pump being the root cause. I will schedule the tow truck first thing tomorrow and update the forum once the repairs are complete. Hoping to catch this early enough to prevent major engine damage from the low oil pressure issues.

Had the exact same issue with my 2008 Caliber diesel last year. I have some experience working on cars but this was beyond my DIY skills. The oil pressure warning light started flickering during idle, then progressed to staying on constantly with those worrying engine noises you described. The oil pressure sensor readings were all over the place, making me initially think it was just a faulty sensor. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed a failing oil pump. The symptoms match yours exactly, the pump wasnt maintaining proper oil pressure, especially at idle. This caused insufficient lubrication and those mechanical noises you mentioned. The total repair came to 755€, including parts and labor. They had to replace the entire oil pump assembly and do an oil change with a new filter since metal particles had contaminated the old oil. Since the repair, oil pressure has been perfect and the engine runs quietly again. Very glad I had it fixed promptly before any bearing damage occurred. To help diagnose your specific case, could you share: Current mileage on your Caliber, When was your last oil change, Is the noise worse at idle or higher RPMs, Any metal particles visible in your oil This would help determine if your symptoms point to the same oil pump failure I experienced.
