Canyon Diesel Injection Failure Shows Key Warning Signs

Looking for advice on what seems like injection system issues on my 2012 GMC Canyon diesel (57005 KM). Power is way down and fuel consumption has gone through the roof lately. Engine keeps stalling at idle and puffs out smoke during acceleration. Last maintenance visit at a shop was pretty sketchy, so not keen on going back there. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What should I watch out for when picking a shop to fix this?

Had similar issues with my 2015 GMC Sierra diesel. The symptoms match what happened, significant power loss, excessive fuel use, and rough idle. The root cause was faulty wiring connections to the fuel injection control module. The repair required specialized diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the exact connection issues in the wiring harness. A damaged wire insulation was causing intermittent signal problems between the engine control unit and injectors. The smoke during acceleration typically indicates improper fuel delivery timing. This is considered a serious issue since faulty connections can lead to complete engine failure or cause permanent damage to the injection system. The repair involved replacing the wiring harness section and testing all injection system components. For choosing a shop: Look for diesel engine certification, Ask if they have proper diagnostic tools for GMC injection systems, Confirm they use genuine parts for injection system repairs, Request a full system pressure test The issue requires immediate attention as continuing to drive with injection problems can cause extensive engine damage. A proper diesel specialist should be able to diagnose this through injection system testing and electrical diagnostics. Air intake and exhaust should also be checked as part of complete maintenance protocol.

Thanks for the detailed response about the fuel injection issue. That wiring problem sounds exactly like what I am experiencing with my Canyon. Mine is also starting to show the same performance issues you described. Could you share roughly what the repair cost was in your case? Also curious if you have had any recurring problems with the injection system since getting it fixed? Might help me budget for the worst case and know what to expect.

Had my Sierra fixed last week actually. The mechanic found a damaged cable connection to the injection system control unit, just as suspected. Total repair came to 95 Euro for replacing the faulty wiring connection. Pretty straightforward job once they identified the exact spot. Since the repair, the diesel engine runs perfectly, no more stalling, normal fuel consumption, and proper power restored. The black smoke during acceleration completely disappeared too. Air intake and fuel delivery are working as they should now. Regular maintenance is key to preventing these issues from returning. The injection system requires clean fuel and proper electrical connections to function correctly. Glad I caught it early before it caused more extensive damage to other components. No recurring problems with the system since the fix. The petrol station visits are back to normal frequency too, rather than the excessive fuel consumption I was experiencing before. Just make sure you find a shop that specializes in diesel injection system diagnostics for the best results.

Finally got my Canyon fixed after dealing with that injection system nightmare. Found a certified diesel specialist who really knew their stuff. The diagnostic process revealed exactly what you mentioned, damaged wiring to the fuel injection control module. The repair took about 4 hours and cost 850 Euro, including parts and labor. Bit steep, but worth every cent considering how much I was wasting on fuel before. They also found a small air leak in the intake system while doing the work, which they fixed at no extra charge. The difference is incredible, engine runs smooth as silk now, no more black smoke, and fuel consumption is back to normal. Definitely learned my lesson about proper maintenance and not skipping regular checkups. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction with this issue.
