Captiva VANOS Fault
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Chevrolet Captiva diesel with 183,995 km had a check engine light and high fuel consumption, linked to a fault in the inlet VANOS mechanics. The suspected causes included a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or a power supply issue. A similar issue in a BMW was resolved by addressing oil sludge affecting the VANOS solenoid. The solution involved replacing the solenoid, checking the power supply, and performing an oil change, which resolved the problem and normalized fuel consumption.

Interesting... Oil sludge, huh? I've heard about that causing issues with BMW VANOS systems. I didn't realize it could affect the Captiva too. Could a clogged oil filter do the same? What was your final solution?

Yeah, the sludge was the culprit for me. It gummed up the VANOS solenoid something fierce. I’m no expert, but if you're getting those codes, I'd get it checked out ASAP. My fix was a thorough engine flush and a new solenoid. Given the age and mileage, maybe a workshop visit is best?

I appreciate the insight! It ended up being exactly as you said – the VANOS solenoid was faulty, probably due to sludge. I got it replaced and the power supply checked, plus an oil change. Cost me 250€, but the check engine light is gone and fuel consumption seems normal again.

Whoa, sounds rough! Something similar happened with my old BMW 3 Series. The check engine light was on, and my fuel economy tanked. Turned out to be oil sludge messing with the VANOS solenoid. Is that possible here?
