Caravan Torque Converter Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Nissan Caravan with a diesel engine is experiencing transmission issues, including a slipping gearbox, grinding noise when shifting, and intermittent check engine and transmission indicator lights. An error code suggests a potential problem with the torque converter lock-up clutch. The issues, combined with a subtle engine surge and darker transmission fluid, indicate a likely failing torque converter. A transmission specialist confirmed the diagnosis, and the problem was resolved with a new torque converter.

Thanks! Yes, there's a subtle engine surge at higher speeds. The transmission fluid is a bit darker than it should be, but not burnt. Does that make a defective torque converter more likely?

Okay, the darker fluid and surging pretty much confirm it. A failing torque converter is almost certainly the problem. Getting into the transmission yourself is risky. Get a diagnosis from a transmission specialist. They can confirm the issue. Transmission work isn't cheap, but you'll know for sure.

Thanks for the advice! I saw a transmission specialist, and they confirmed the torque converter is gone. The repair, with a new converter, was 2120€. It was expensive, but at least it's fixed.

Sounds like a real pain. With the grinding and error code, a dodgy torque converter is definitely possible. That lock-up clutch failing can cause shifting issues. Have you noticed any engine surge when cruising? How's the transmission fluid look? Burnt fluid could mean internal damage.
