Cavalier Faulty Generator
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier is experiencing issues likely due to a faulty generator, as indicated by reduced engine power, warning lights, hard starts, weak lights, and an error code. A voltage test showed the battery at 12.5V when off and 11.8V when running, suggesting the alternator isn't charging the battery. The suggested solution is to have the generator checked and replaced by a professional, which was confirmed and resolved by a mechanic.

Thanks! I did the voltage test. The battery reads 12.5V when off, but only 11.8V when running. Does this confirm a bad generator, or could other things cause this before I replace it?

Okay, that voltage drop while running is a HUGE red flag. 11.8V means your battery is likely only running off its own stored power and not getting any help from the alternator. While there could be a wiring issue causing a voltage leak, given all the symptoms, it’s highly likely the generator is the root cause. Honestly, I wouldn't mess around too much more with it yourself, especially if you aren't super comfortable with auto electrics. Take it to a reputable workshop. They can confirm the diagnosis and replace the generator. The estimate was 960€, which is what you should plan for.

Thanks for the advice! I took the Cavalier to a certified mechanic. They confirmed a defective generator, like I thought. The repair was 960€ including parts and labor. Thanks again for your help!

Whoa, that sounds like a cascade of problems! Reduced engine power AND flickering lights? That doesn't sound good at all. A faulty generator could definitely be the culprit, especially with all those electrical issues. Have you tried checking the battery voltage? A simple multimeter test might give you a clue if the charging system is truly failing. A fully charged battery should read around 12.6 volts. With the engine running, it should be closer to 14 volts if the alternator is doing its job. What readings are you getting?
