CHR check engine light VANOS issue

My 2021 Toyota CHR with a gasoline engine (74602 km) has an intermittent check engine light and increased fuel consumption. Diagnostics suggest the inlet VANOS mechanics might be faulty. Could a camshaft solenoid valve or power supply issue be the cause? I want to avoid an engine misfire or timing chain problems.

I had a similar issue with my CHR: check engine light, increased fuel consumption. Did you notice any change in engine performance or unusual noises? Could be VANOS failure. Has the car been regularly serviced?

Engine performance seems slightly diminished, especially at lower RPMs. No unusual noises, though. Regular servicing, yes, always on schedule. Was it definitely the VANOS for you? Anything specific I should tell the workshop to check?

Yeah, it was the VANOS. I didn't dive too deep myself; took it straight to the workshop. They replaced the faulty solenoid valve. I'd suggest you do the same. Might save you a lot of headache.

I took it to a local mechanic who was also sure it was the VANOS. They replaced the camshaft solenoid valve, and the check engine light is now off, and fuel consumption is back to normal. Total repair cost was 250€.
