Citan Automatic Transmission Issue

My 2012 Mercedes Citan diesel has the check engine light and transmission indicator on The auto transmission seems to slip, shifts roughly, and I hear grinding when it changes gears Scanning shows an error related to the torque converter lock-up clutch Has this happened to anyone I'm looking at around 2120€ for the transmission repair Any advice

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Mercedes Citan diesel is experiencing issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping, rough shifting, and grinding noises, accompanied by a check engine light and transmission indicator. The problem is linked to an error related to the torque converter lock-up clutch, which can cause these symptoms when it fails. The suggested solution is to replace the entire torque converter, as repairing just the lock-up clutch might not be cost-effective due to potential wear on other parts. A proper diagnosis by a trusted mechanic is recommended to confirm the issue.

That sounds rough I had a similar issue with my Citan, though a different year The auto transmission was acting up, and it turned out to be the lock-up clutch in the automatic transmission The lock-up clutch creates a direct mechanical connection between the engine and the transmission in certain gears, improving fuel efficiency When it fails, the transmission can slip, causing those rough shifts and noises The error code you got sounds spot on Did you notice any difference in fuel consumption before this started

Interesting I hadn't really paid attention to the fuel consumption, to be honest I was more focused on the horrible noises But now that you mention it, it does seem like I'm filling up more often So, if it was the lock-up clutch in your auto transmission, what did you do to fix it Did you need a whole new transmission, or could it be repaired

The fuel consumption change can be subtle at first In my case, the mechanic confirmed it was the automatic transmission converter While you might be able to repair just the lock-up clutch, most shops will recommend replacing the entire torque converter It's often more cost-effective because other parts inside the converter might be worn as well Given the symptoms and the error code, take it to a trusted mechanic and get a proper diagnosis It sounds like the auto transmission converter, but it's always best to be sure

Thanks a lot for the insight It sounds like my suspicions were correct I'll take it to my mechanic and get a proper diagnosis, but at least I'm going in knowing what to expect I appreciate you sharing your experience It's never fun dealing with automatic transmission problems, especially when it involves the lock-up clutch and potentially a new transmission I got the car back from the workshop As you suggested, the whole automatic transmission converter needed to be replaced The cost was exactly as estimated
