Citan Seat Warmer Problem

My 2014 Mercedes Citan with a gasoline engine has a bum warmer issue. It has 178214 km on the clock. The seat heating doesn't get warm at all, and the error memory has a fault stored. Is it likely the seat heating mat is toast?

Summary of the thread

The 2014 Mercedes Citan has a seat warmer issue where the seat heating doesn't function, and an error code is stored. The problem is likely due to a defective seat heating mat, but a faulty thermal sensor or wiring harness could also be potential causes. Checking the thermal sensor with a multimeter is suggested, but due to the complexity, visiting a workshop for diagnosis is recommended. Ultimately, the workshop confirmed the heating mat was the issue, and the repair was approved.

Indeed, a defective seat heating mat is a plausible cause, especially given the error code. I had a similar issue with my previous Volvo, a V70. The seat warmer suddenly stopped working. Before condemning the mat, have you checked the thermal sensor and wiring harness underneath the seat? A faulty sensor can also trigger an error and prevent the heater from activating. What error code is being reported?

Thermal sensor, you say? Where exactly is that located, and is it easy to check without ripping the whole seat apart? Is it possible to measure it with a multimeter?

The thermal sensor is usually embedded within the seat cushion itself, often near the heating mat. Accessing it might require partial disassembly of the seat, which can be tricky. Yes, you can test it with a multimeter, but you would need the correct specifications for the sensor to determine if the readings are within the acceptable range. Given the potential complexity and the error code pointing towards a more definitive failure, I would cautiously suggest visiting a workshop for a diagnosis before you potentially damage something. You mentioned a repair cost of 390€, which is a fair price considering the labor involved in replacing a seat cushion.

Thanks for the advice. I've taken it to the workshop. They confirmed it's the heating mat in the seat cushion, just like suspected. Quoted 390€ all in, so I gave them the go-ahead.
