Citroen C4 Gear Shift Indicator Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2006 Citroen C4 with a gasoline engine is experiencing issues with its gear shift indicator display, leading to difficulty in shifting smoothly, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. The problem is consistent regardless of engine temperature, and an error is stored in the system. A faulty control unit is suggested as the likely cause, as it could send incorrect signals affecting gear selection and display functionality. Visiting a Citroen specialist is recommended for diagnosis and repair.

The issue is there whether the engine is cold or warmed up. I haven't noticed a weather connection, but I'll watch for it. How would a bad control unit cause these symptoms?

The control unit controls the signals for gear selection in your automatic transmission. If it's bad, it can send the wrong signals, causing the shifting issues, slipping, grinding, and the display problem. Other things could be involved, but the error codes and symptoms point to the control unit. You should visit a Citroen specialist. I'd estimate around 1000€ for this repair.

Thanks for the detailed explanation and cost estimate. I'll book an appointment with a workshop to get it checked out. Appreciate the help.

Sounds like a faulty control unit, which would explain those symptoms. Does this happen right when you start the car, or only after driving for a bit? Also, is the problem worse in hot or cold weather?
