Citroen C8 Diesel Particulate Filter Pressure

Alright, Citroen C8 (2010, diesel) owners, my beast's got 135k km and is throwing up a 'diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low' warning. I'm also getting reduced power, smoke clouds when I put my foot down, and the exhaust smells like a truck stop. I'm thinking it's the exhaust back pressure sensor, but could it be something else? Anyone else battled this?

Summary of the thread

A Citroen C8 owner reported a 'diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low' warning, along with reduced power, smoke, and a strong exhaust smell. The issue was suspected to be a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor, which could prevent the diesel particulate filter (DPF) from regenerating properly. After a diagnostic scan confirmed the sensor malfunction, replacing it resolved the problem, restoring the vehicle's performance and eliminating the symptoms.

Greetings. Your symptoms do suggest a potential fault within the diesel particulate filter (DPF) system. I recall a similar predicament with my previous Volvo V70, albeit a different engine configuration. Did you observe whether the vehicle attempted DPF regeneration cycles recently? A malfunctioning sensor could certainly impede the process, but other factors such as excessive soot accumulation within the DPF itself should be excluded before condemning the sensor.

Regeneration, you say? Hmm, not that I've noticed. To be honest, I'm not even sure when it should be doing it. Is there usually an obvious sign? And if it's not regenerating, could a dodgy sensor really cause all those symptoms? Seems like a lot!

Indeed. The symptoms you are experiencing are consistent with a failure to properly regenerate the DPF. A faulty exhaust back pressure sensor can provide erroneous data to the engine control unit (ECU), which, in turn, may prevent the initiation of the regeneration cycle. While a diagnostic scan is indispensable to confirm the sensor's malfunction, your observations strongly point in that direction. I advise seeking professional diagnosis and repair; attempting to rectify DPF issues without specialized knowledge and equipment carries inherent risks.

Spot on! Turns out you were bang on the money. Took it to the shop, they hooked it up to the diagnostics, and bam – faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. 245€ later and she's running like a dream again. No more smoke, no more stinky exhaust, and the power's back. Cheers for the help!
