Clio VANOS Issue

My 2007 Renault Clio with a gasoline engine is giving me grief. The check engine light is on, and I've noticed a definite increase in fuel consumption lately. I'm suspecting it's something to do with the inlet VANOS mechanics. I've read that a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or a power supply issue could be the culprit. Anyone else run into this?

VANOS issues on a Clio? Ouch! Is the engine misfiring at all? Maybe get the fault codes read to point you in the right direction.

No misfiring that I can detect, but I will read the fault codes. Assuming it does point to the VANOS, is it usually the solenoid itself that fails, or could it be something else like the timing chain being stretched?

Could be the solenoid, could be other stuff, but honestly, VANOS problems can be tricky. I'd take it to a workshop. Messing with the timing chain is not a job for the faint of heart!

Yeah, you're probably right. I bit the bullet and took it to a mechanic. Turns out it was indeed a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, just like I suspected. Cost me around 250€ to get it sorted, but at least the check engine light is off now. Thanks for the advice!
