CLK Diesel Belt Handover Problem
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a belt handover malfunction in a 2003 Mercedes CLK diesel, with a suspicion that the belt bringer mechanism might be defective. The issue is characterized by increased engine noise, described as a pronounced whirring sound. A similar problem was resolved by replacing a faulty belt tensioner, which had a bad spring, causing insufficient belt tension. The suggested solution is to have the vehicle inspected and repaired at a workshop to prevent potential damage, with an estimated repair cost of 455€.

Thanks for the response You mention a squealing noise upon startup While there is an increase in engine noise it is not precisely a squeal It is more of a pronounced whirring sound Could you elaborate on the specifics of your situation and the eventual resolution Was the belt tensioner the sole issue or were there other contributing factors such as the idler pulley

Okay mine started with a slight whirring that turned into a full-blown squeal over a couple of weeks I tried spraying some belt dressing on it but that only helped for like a day Eventually I took it to a workshop and they said the tensioner was shot The spring had gone bad and it wasn't keeping the belt tight enough They replaced the tensioner and the noise went away completely Honestly I wouldn't mess with it too much yourself A loose timing belt can cause some serious damage

I appreciate you sharing your experience Based on your recommendation and considering the potential for consequential damage I will arrange for an inspection and repair at a reputable workshop The cost estimate of 455€ now seems a more reasonable investment to prevent further complications Thanks again for your valuable input

That sounds familiar I have a CLK too though I can't remember the exact year Is it making a weird squealing noise especially when you first start it up For me it turned out to be related to the belt tensioner
