CMAX Coolant Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2019 Ford CMAX diesel is experiencing coolant loss, causing the check engine light to activate. Despite a visual inspection of the radiator hoses and cap, no obvious leaks were found. Suggestions include checking for white smoke or sweet smells indicating a head gasket issue, and bleeding the system for air pockets. Ultimately, a workshop visit revealed a small leak near the water pump, which was fixed by replacing a hose.

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't noticed any white smoke or sweet smells, but I also didn't specifically check for those. How exactly do I bleed the system for air pockets in a CMAX? Is there a specific bleed valve location I should be looking for?

Okay, no smoke or sweet smell is (probably) good news! Bleeding the system can be a bit fiddly. I found a guide online specific to the CMAX, which helped me locate the bleed valve. But honestly, if you're not super comfortable doing it yourself, and the level keeps dropping, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. A pressure test of the coolant system can pinpoint even tiny leaks that are invisible to the naked eye. Saved me a lot of headache!

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a local shop, and they found a very small leak at one of the hoses near the water pump. They replaced the hose and topped off the coolant. Cost me 52€, but at least it's sorted now.

Oh man, coolant issues are the WORST! I had something similar happen with my CMAX (though it's an older model). Coolant disappearing act! First off, have you checked for any white smoke coming from the exhaust? That could point to a head gasket issue. Also, sometimes a small coolant leak can be hard to spot because the coolant evaporates quickly, especially on a hot engine. What about any sweet smell after the engine has been running? That is often coolant. Have you tried bleeding the system for air pockets? They can cause wacky coolant level readings.
