Cobalt bypass valve error overheating

Hey, I've got a 2017 Chevrolet Cobalt with a gasoline engine that's throwing me for a loop. It's got about 159k km on the clock. I'm getting an error stored in the memory related to the bypass valve, and the engine seems to be overheating. I've checked the coolant levels and vacuum lines, but everything looks normal. I suspect it might be a consequential error from something else. Any ideas where to start?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Chevrolet Cobalt with 159,000 km is experiencing a bypass valve error and engine overheating. Initial checks of coolant levels and vacuum lines showed no issues, leading to suspicion of a consequential error. A similar case suggested a coolant leak affecting the vacuum system, but the actual problem was a faulty sensor causing the bypass valve error. Replacing the sensor resolved the overheating issue, and the repair was covered under warranty.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar issue with my Cobalt. Have you noticed any loss of fuel efficiency or engine stalling at all? Mine turned out to be a small coolant leak that was messing with the vacuum system and throwing off the bypass valve readings.

Interesting. I haven't noticed any significant fuel efficiency drop or stalling, but I'll keep an eye on it. Where was the coolant leak located on your car? Was it easy to spot?

Mine was a pinhole leak in one of the hoses near the thermostat housing, pretty hard to see at first. But honestly, with that bypass valve error and the overheating, I'd recommend getting it checked out by a workshop. Could be something more serious.

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate the heads-up about the potential leak location. I took it to the shop, and you were right – it was a faulty sensor causing the bypass valve error. They replaced it, and the overheating is gone. Repair was covered under warranty, so ended up costing me nothing!
