Cobalt check engine light and smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Chevy Cobalt experienced a check engine light, power loss, and smoke when accelerating. A possible cause suggested was an issue with the crankcase ventilation, specifically the PCV valve. It was advised to inspect the PCV valve and associated hoses for damage. After taking the car to a workshop, the PCV valve was confirmed as the problem, and replacing it resolved the issues.

Thanks for the tip! I'm sitting at around 169169 km. So, the hoses too, huh? Is there a way to test the valve itself, or is it more of a 'replace and see' kind of thing?

At that mileage, it's prime time for rubber components to degrade. As for testing the valve, there are some DIY methods involving vacuum and carb cleaner, but honestly, it's tough to be definitive without proper equipment. Given the symptoms, mileage, and my own experience, I'd lean towards getting it checked out by a workshop. They can confirm with a smoke test or other diagnostic tools. Could save you from chasing other potential problems.

Appreciate the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on. It was the PCV valve, just like you said. The repair cost was about 360€ including parts and labor. Runs like a champ now, no more smoke or check engine light. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, also with a gasoline engine. Check engine light, rough idle, and even some smoke. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty PCV valve causing a leak. That unmetered air messes with the fuel mixture. I would check all the hoses connected to the PCV and the valve itself for any cracks or damage. What mileage are you at?
