Cobalt exhaust smoke acceleration issue

My 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt with a gasoline engine is having a weird issue. The check engine light is on, and when I accelerate, it's puffing out smoke. Been told it might be an exhaust back pressure sensor. Any ideas?

Hey, I had something similar happen with my Cobalt! Sounds like you might be on the right track with the exhaust sensor. Is your gas mileage also in the toilet? It's like trying to run a marathon with a plastic bag over your head!

Yeah, the mileage has gotten worse! How did you figure out it was the sensor? Did you try fixing it yourself, or is it one of those things best left to a mechanic?

Definitely sounds like the same gremlin. I wouldn't mess with it yourself unless you REALLY know what you're doing. It's a pain to get to, and you could screw up the exhaust system even more. I'd take it to a decent shop. Trust me, save yourself the headache!

Thanks for the advice! Took it to the shop and yep, it was the exhaust back pressure sensor. Cost me 245€ to get it sorted, but at least the smoke show is over!
