Wow, thanks for sharing those details about the PTC heater repair. Your HVAC system issues sound exactly like what I experienced. Quick follow up, curious what the total repair cost was for you? My heating element is definitely showing the same symptoms, and Id like to budget properly before heading to the shop. Also wondering if youve had any other temperature control issues pop up since getting it fixed? My engine is still running rough on cold starts, so I should probably get this sorted soon before winter hits and the heating system causes more problems.

Just wanted to update on the repair costs, the electrical fault with the PTC heater ended up costing 350 Euro total. The mechanic replaced the defective electric auxiliary heater and recalibrated the temperature control system. The cold air issues completely disappeared after the fix. No more heating system problems during startup, and the engine runs perfectly smooth now even in cold conditions. The fuel economy is back to normal too. Its been about 3 weeks since the heater repair and everything is working exactly as it should. The cabin heats up quickly and maintains consistent temperature. Definitely worth getting it fixed before winter, these heating system problems tend to get worse in colder weather. The repair shop explained that failing PTC heaters are pretty common on these engines, so its a known issue they deal with regularly. Getting it fixed early likely prevented additional wear on other components.

I took your advice and finally got my A3 checked out at a different mechanic. Turned out you were spot on about the PTC heater being the culprit. The repair bill came to 380 Euro, which included replacing the heating element and resetting the HVAC system controls. The mechanic was much better this time, explained everything clearly and showed me the worn-out heating element. Job took about 3 hours total, and the difference is night and day. My cold starts are smooth now, and the heating system kicks in properly right from startup. Fuel consumption has dropped back to normal levels, and the temperature control works perfectly. Such a relief to have proper heat again. Really glad I got it sorted before the cold weather hits, the mechanic mentioned these heater repair jobs get backed up during winter months. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction with this. Saved me from jumping to more expensive potential fixes.

Had similar symptoms on my 2012 Audi A4 2.0 TDI. The heating system issues during cold starts pointed to a faulty PTC heater, which is a common wear item on these diesel engines. The electric auxiliary heater plays a crucial role in cold weather performance. When it fails, you get exactly these symptoms, rough cold starts, increased fuel consumption, and poor cabin heating during initial startup. The temperature control issues occur because the system compensates for the failed heating element by running the engine harder. Got it fixed at a garage last month. The diagnostic confirmed the PTC heater failure. The repair involved replacing the complete heating element assembly and resetting the control module. It was a significant repair that took about 4 hours of labor. The symptoms disappeared completely after the fix: Engine starts smoothly in cold weather, Fuel consumption returned to normal, Heat works properly from startup, No more error codes Worth checking the PTC heater first before exploring other issues. The symptoms match the typical pattern of auxiliary heater failure on these engines.
