Coolant Loss Issue on Mercedes CLK

My 2004 Mercedes CLK with a gasoline engine has a rapidly dropping coolant level, triggering the check engine light and error codes. I've checked for coolant leaks, but found nothing. Could air pockets be the cause, or is the radiator cap faulty? The water pump and cooling fan appear to be working. The error code suggests a defective cable or plug connection. Where should I start looking?

Summary of the thread

The 2004 Mercedes CLK experienced a rapidly dropping coolant level, triggering the check engine light and error codes. Despite no visible leaks, potential causes considered included air pockets or a faulty radiator cap. The error code suggested a defective cable or plug connection, leading to the discovery of a faulty coolant level sensor connection. The issue was resolved with professional diagnosis and repair.

I understand your frustration. I had a similar issue with my old Volvo. The coolant level was consistently low, and the engine warning light activated. Have you considered inspecting the radiator cap for proper sealing? A faulty seal can lead to coolant loss due to evaporation. Also, have you seen any coolant leaks around the water pump or along the coolant hoses?

The radiator cap seems fine, but how can I be absolutely sure it's sealing properly? Is there a definitive test? I haven't seen any drips from the water pump, but could coolant be escaping in a way I'm missing?

Determining the radiator cap's integrity often requires specialized testing equipment. Subtle water pump leaks can be challenging to detect visually. Given the potential complexity and the error code suggesting a cable or plug issue, a professional diagnosis might be best. The issue might not be easily solved without the appropriate equipment.

Thanks for the advice! It was a faulty coolant level sensor connection, just like the error code hinted at. The workshop bill was 95€, but at least the mystery is solved. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction!
