Corolla Gear Shift Indicator Failure

My 2002 Toyota Corolla diesel's gear shift indicator is blank. I'm also having trouble engaging gears, with the automatic transmission slipping and shifting uncleanly, plus grinding noises. There's an error stored too. Anyone seen this combo before?

I've had similar shifting problems with my Corolla. I read about sensor issues on the gear selector. Check the connections to the shift knob, or the sensor itself. Sounds like my issue. Have you read the error code? It could point to a sensor problem or a wider electronics issue.

What specific symptoms did you have? Did your gear selection display also stop working when the other shifting problems started? Trying to figure out if this is common or just me.

Yeah, the gear selection display was totally dead. I had the slipping and grinding noises too. I had to take it to a shop to get it fixed. My mechanic thought the control unit was faulty, which seems right with all the symptoms.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like a workshop visit is the way to go. I'll book an appointment and let you know what they find. Initial estimates are around 1000€.
