Corolla steering problem

I am experiencing an issue with my 2006 Toyota Corolla, gasoline engine, with approximately 195074 km on the odometer. I've noticed increased effort required when steering, almost as if the power steering is failing intermittently. Furthermore, the steering wheel vibrates/shakes, especially at lower speeds. Could this be related to a defective steering angle sensor? I suspect the coding of the steering angle sensor might be faulty, but I am unsure how to proceed further. Has anyone encountered something similar?

Steering problems, eh? I had something similar happen with my Corolla, though I can't remember the exact year of manufacture. Felt like wrestling an alligator at times. The shaking is a worry, too. Did you get any alignment problems before this started? It could be the sensor, but have you checked the basics like power steering fluid level and belt tension? Sometimes it's the simple things that get overlooked. Has the car been throwing any warning lights?

Thank you for your input. The power steering fluid level appears to be within the normal range, and the belt tension seems adequate upon visual inspection. The car has not displayed any warning lights on the dashboard. Regarding alignment problems, I haven't noticed any recent issues, but I will certainly double-check. Did your Corolla exhibit similar symptoms before you determined the steering angle sensor was the culprit?

Yeah, the symptoms sound pretty close to what I experienced. The intermittent loss of power steering and the weird vibrations were the giveaways. I messed around with the fluid and belts too, but no joy. Honestly, I'd suggest getting it to a workshop with the proper diagnostic tools. They can read the sensor data and see if it's reporting correctly. It could save you a lot of time and guesswork. I think I remember that it was the steering angle sensor in the end. They recalibrated or replaced it, can't remember exactly.

I appreciate the advice. Based on your experience, I will schedule an appointment with a qualified workshop to diagnose the steering angle sensor. After the mechanic looked at it, the coding of the steering angle sensor was faulty and was the problem. The cost for the replacement and recalibration was 195€. Thank you for your help!
