Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value Error

My 2021 Mercedes Viano, diesel engine, has a check engine light, reduced power, sluggish engine response, and increased fuel consumption. The diagnostic tool shows a 'crankshaft to camshaft reference value' error. Is the crank sensor the issue, or could it be the camshaft sensor, or even a misfire?

I had a similar issue on my Vito, same reference value error. Did you check the crank sensor wiring for damage? Is there any oil leaking around the sensor?

I did a quick visual inspection of the wiring and didn't see anything obvious, but I haven't checked for oil leaks specifically around the sensor. When you say similar issue, was it definitely the crank sensor on yours?

Yes, it was the crank sensor. If the wiring looks okay and there's no obvious oil contamination, I'd start there. I'd suggest getting it checked out at a workshop.

It sounds like the crank sensor is the most likely culprit. I replaced the crank sensor and cleared the fault codes. Everything seems to be running smoothly again, power is back, and the engine is responsive. The repair cost was around 340€ altogether.
