Croma Overheating Speed Sensor

My 2007 Fiat Croma diesel is overheating, and the check engine light is on. Coolant level is fine. I suspect the radiator fan. Anyone seen this? Could a defective speed sensor cause this?

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Fiat Croma diesel is experiencing overheating with the check engine light on, despite the coolant level being fine. The initial suspicion is a faulty radiator fan, but a defective speed sensor is also considered a potential cause. The conversation suggests checking the fan's operation and the thermal switch, with a recommendation to have the vehicle professionally diagnosed. Ultimately, the issue was traced to a defective speed sensor, which was repaired, resolving the overheating problem.

Overheating and the check engine light are never fun. Sounds like a cooling issue, and if the fan isn't kicking on, that's a prime suspect. A faulty speed sensor could be related, as the engine management system uses that data to regulate things like fan speed... but it's a bit like saying a bad light switch could cause your fridge to stop working. Possible, but not the first thing I'd check. Does the fan spin freely by hand? Have you tried checking the thermal switch?

Thanks! Yes, the fan blade spins with no drag. Where can I find the thermal switch, and how can I test it? I don't have much experience with those parts but will try.

Alright, the fact that the fan spins freely means it's probably not a seized motor. The thermal switch is usually located on the radiator itself, often near the bottom. You can try bridging the connections on the switch to see if the fan kicks on – be careful though! If it does, the switch is probably faulty. Given your description and the mileage, I'd honestly recommend getting it checked out by a workshop. They can properly diagnose the electrical system and pinpoint the exact issue.

Thanks so much for the advice. I followed your suggestion and took the Croma to a local workshop. Turns out the speed sensor was indeed defective, preventing the fan from activating. The total repair cost was 250€. The car is running perfectly now. I appreciate your help!
