Croma Preheating Lamp Stays On
Summary of the thread
The issue with the 2007 Croma diesel involved the preheating lamp staying on, a check engine light, and excessive smoke. The suspected cause was a faulty preheating control unit cable or plug. After taking the car to a workshop, it was confirmed that the problem was due to a defective preheating control unit caused by a corroded connector. The solution involved replacing the connector and control unit.

I haven't tested the glow plugs individually yet. How do I test them, and what readings should I expect? Also, are there specific diagnostic trouble codes for the preheating control unit to prioritize?

Testing glow plugs usually involves using a multimeter to check their resistance. A very low or infinite resistance indicates a bad plug. As for diagnostic codes, a generic OBD2 scanner should give you a code related to the preheating circuit or individual glow plugs. Given the age and mileage, and your suspicion of a cable fault, it might be best to take it to a workshop to get a proper diagnosis before throwing parts at it.

Took it to a workshop. They confirmed a defective preheating control unit due to a corroded connector. Repair, including connector and control unit replacement, cost 95€.

Sounds like it could be the preheating unit. Have you checked the glow plugs themselves? Sometimes a bad glow plug can cause similar symptoms. The preheating control unit monitors the glow plugs. If one isn't working correctly, it could trigger the issues you're seeing. Also, what diagnostic codes are you getting from the check engine light?
