Croma steering issues
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Fiat Croma diesel with 53,583 km is experiencing steering issues, including increased effort to turn and occasional vibrations. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the steering angle sensor, which is crucial for the electronic stability program and traction control system. The solution involves checking, recalibrating, or replacing the sensor, as faulty coding or a defective sensor can lead to these issues. After replacement, the steering problem was resolved.

Thanks for the quick reply! No ESP light and I don't have an OBD2 scanner, so I can't check for error codes myself. But could faulty coding of the sensor cause these symptoms?

Yes, absolutely! Faulty coding can definitely cause those symptoms. The sensor's calibration is crucial for its proper function. If it's not correctly calibrated, the car's computer receives incorrect information, leading to power steering issues and vibrations. Given your symptoms and mileage, I'd strongly advise getting the steering angle sensor checked and potentially recoded or replaced at a workshop. It is likely the root cause of your problems, especially since it is a common issue. Don't keep driving like that, as it can impact other systems.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I took it to a local mechanic. Turns out the steering angle sensor was defective. They replaced it and the total cost was 195€. Steering is now perfect.

Steering problems on a Croma, eh? I had something similar a while back. Increased effort and vibrations... sounds suspiciously like a faulty steering angle sensor. These sensors play a crucial role in the electronic stability program (ESP) and traction control system. They tell the car's computer the position of the steering wheel. Is the ESP light on? Have you checked for any error codes using an OBD2 scanner?
