Dead AC Compressor in Jaguar XJ, Repair Cost Guide

My AC compressor seems to be dying in my 2017 Jaguar XJ diesel (132k km). The air conditioning stopped cooling completely and wont even turn on anymore. The warning light came on and the car stored an error code. Has anyone dealt with a similar automotive cooling issue on their Jag? Looking for recommendations on typical repair costs and experiences with this kind of vehicle HVAC failure. Really want to avoid getting overcharged at the shop after some previous bad experiences.

Had the same auto AC repair situation last year on my 2014 Jaguar XF 3.0D. The AC unit issues started similarly, complete cooling loss and control unit failure. The diagnosis revealed two major problems: a significant refrigerant leak at the compressor shaft seal and a failed AC control module. These cooling system failures are relatively common on these models after 100k km. The repair required: Full AC system evacuation, Compressor replacement, New receiver drier, Control module replacement, Refrigerant recharge with leak testing This was a serious repair requiring specialized equipment and Jaguar-specific diagnostic tools. The AC compressor failure can potentially damage other components if not addressed promptly. The shop needed to keep the car for 3 days to complete all work properly. Worth noting that simply recharging the refrigerant without fixing the underlying compressor issue would have been a waste of money, as the system would leak again within weeks. The control module failure is a known weakness point requiring dealer-level programming after replacement.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the AC repair. My XJ is currently at the shop and your case sounds exactly like what they diagnosed on mine, both the refrigerant leak and control module problems. They mentioned similar repair steps would be needed. Could you share what the total cost ended up being for your repair? Also curious if youve had any other cooling system issues since getting it fixed?

Since getting the car refrigerant compressor failure fixed last year, the vehicle HVAC system has worked flawlessly. The total repair came to 980€ for the air conditioning control unit replacement and associated work. The car has gone through all seasons without any cooling system issues. The initial diagnosis was spot-on and addressing both the compressor and control module together was definitely the right approach. The auto AC repair has proven to be a long-term solution, no leaks, strong cooling performance, and reliable operation ever since. For reference, my car has done another 25k km since the repair with zero car air conditioning problems. The investment was worth it considering the complete resolution of the issue and the importance of a properly functioning cooling system in these vehicles.

I just got my XJ back from the shop yesterday after the automotive cooling system repair. The total came to 1150€, which was actually less than I expected after reading about your experience. The mechanic showed me the old compressor, it was completely shot and had damaged the seals. They did a full air conditioning repair including the compressor replacement and control module, plus a complete system flush. The shop had it for 4 days total since they needed to order some specific parts. Already noticed a huge difference, the AC is ice cold now and the warning lights are gone. The auto refrigerant pressure is perfect according to their final test readings. Definitely feels good having this fixed properly rather than trying cheaper temporary solutions.
