I faced the exact same sound quality problems with my Subaru last year. The audio troubleshooting steps you described match what my mechanic did perfectly. The amplifier replacement fixed everything, and I havent had any audio connectivity issues since. Have you gotten yours fixed yet? Would be interested to know the repair cost you were quoted. In my case, the parts alone were quite expensive due to the auxiliary input and Bluetooth modules needing replacement too.

Fixed my audio system issues completely three weeks ago. The mechanic found a defective Bass speaker causing the radio silence problem. Total repair came to 280€ which included labor and parts replacement. Sound quality is back to normal now and all audio connectivity features work perfectly, radio, Bluetooth pairing, and auxiliary inputs are all functioning as they should. Much simpler fix than expected since it turned out to be just one faulty speaker rather than the whole amplifier unit needing replacement. Really glad I went to get it properly diagnosed instead of trying DIY fixes that might have made things worse.

Thanks for everyones input. Finally got my car back from the shop today. My volume control and audio connectivity are working perfectly now. Turned out the amplifier was indeed fried, just like several of you suggested. The mechanic I went to this time found loose wiring connections that the previous shop left behind. They had to replace the entire amplifier unit to restore proper sound quality to the car speakers. Parts and labor came to 450€, which was less than I expected after reading about others experiences. Really glad I switched mechanics. The new shop did a thorough job testing all components before replacing anything. No more radio silence, the sound system works even better than before the original problems started.

I experienced the same audio system failure in my 2009 Subaru R1 last winter. The complete radio silence across all outputs pointed to a central issue rather than individual speaker problems. The root cause turned out to be a failed audio amplifier unit, which is a serious component in the sound system architecture. After diagnosis, we found that improper voltage during previous maintenance had damaged the main amplifier circuit. Key troubleshooting steps that revealed the issue: Tested each individual speaker connection, Verified Bluetooth issue was system-wide, Checked fuse box for blown audio fuses, Tested volume control functionality, Inspected main harness connections The repair required complete amplifier replacement and rewiring of the main audio harness. This was not a simple fix-it-yourself job due to the complexity of the sound system integration with the cars electrical network. Would recommend having a certified audio specialist inspect the system, especially if previous work might have involved electrical components. These symptoms typically indicate a main unit failure rather than speaker-specific problems.
