Dead Wipers on Audi A2: Multiple Potential Culprits

My A2 from 2003 (42574km, gasoline) has completely dead windshield wipers. The error code shows an issue, but after a bad experience with my last repair, I want to be prepared before going to another shop. Could this be a faulty wiper switch in the steering column? Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and can share what the actual problem was, maybe wiring harness or wiper motor? Looking for real experiences to avoid unnecessary repairs.

The symptoms match what I encountered with an A3 from 2000. Initially suspected the wiper switch in the steering column, but diagnostic testing revealed a damaged wiring harness connecting to the wiper motor. The rain sensor was functioning correctly, but the signal wasnt reaching the motor due to corroded wiring. The repair involved replacing the complete wiring harness assembly since individual wire repair wasnt reliable for this component. While the steering column didnt need removal, accessing the wiring required considerable disassembly of the cowl area. This was a serious repair due to the complexity of routing the new wiring harness properly. The issue caused complete wiper failure similar to your situation. A professional diagnosis is important here since the wiring, motor, and switch can present identical symptoms. If you notice any intermittent operation before complete failure, this typically points to wiring harness issues rather than a switch or motor problem. Testing the wiper motor directly with a power source can help isolate whether its a motor failure or wiring issue. This should be handled by a professional due to the electrical system complexity.

Just wanted to follow up on your detailed response. My windshield wipers also failed completely on my A2, and I had exactly the same issue with the wiring harness. The cruise control and turn signal functions were also affected since they share some of the wiring paths. Would you mind sharing how much you paid for the repair? Mine was done a few months ago and Im curious to compare costs. Also wondering if youve had any other electrical issues since getting it fixed? The car wipers are working perfectly now but Im always a bit nervous about these older electrical systems.

Thanks for asking about the repair costs. After visiting the mechanic last week, my wiper switch issue turned out simpler than expected. While the symptoms matched your wiring harness problems, in my case it was just a loose connection at the steering column plug that needed fixing. The total bill came to 95 Euro, which included diagnostic testing and repair. The car wipers have worked flawlessly since the repair, with no issues affecting the cruise control or other steering column functions. Unlike your situation, my electrical system didnt require extensive wiring harness replacement, which explains the lower repair cost. Your concern about older electrical systems is valid, but proper maintenance helps prevent most issues. Since the repair, Ive had no electrical problems with any components in the steering column area.

I went to the mechanic yesterday after reading the responses here. The wiper motor diagnosis showed it was actually the wiring harness causing the problem. The entire assembly needed replacement since the old wiring was badly corroded near the motor connection. The total repair cost was 485 Euro including parts and labor. Much more than a simple wiper switch replacement, but at least all systems including the cruise control are working perfectly now. They showed me the damaged wiring, it was pretty obvious once they pulled back the protective covering. The rain sensor and wiper motor both tested fine, so I'm glad I asked here first. Helped me understand what to expect and avoided getting quoted for unnecessary parts replacement. The car wipers are now working like new, which is a relief with winter coming up. The mechanic did a thorough job documenting everything and showed me exactly where the wiring had failed. After 3 weeks of operation, no electrical issues have appeared. Really appreciate the guidance from everyone here, saved me from potentially getting overcharged for unneeded repairs.
