Defender SOS Call System Dead, How to Fix?

Hey everyone! My 2020 Defender's emergency call system suddenly stopped working. The dash shows it's completely non-functional. I suspect there might be an issue with the emergency call module itself. Has anyone dealt with this problem before? What was the actual fix at the workshop? Interested to hear about repair costs and time needed for the fix. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I actually faced a similar issue with my 2018 Land Rover Discovery. The emergency call system went completely dead, and like yours, the dash showed it wasn't working at all. After taking it to my workshop, they found out that the main speaker for the system was fried. Got it fixed for around 305 Euro, the repair included replacing the speaker and recalibrating the system. The whole thing took about 3 hours to complete. Pretty straightforward fix, thankfully! Could you tell me if you're hearing any strange noises from where the emergency call speaker should be? Also, did this happen suddenly or was there any warning beforehand? These details would help me understand if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Defender has 98835 KM and was just serviced last month. I haven't noticed any weird sounds from the speaker area, it just stopped working out of nowhere during a regular drive. No warning lights or messages before it died. The dash just suddenly showed the system was inactive. I really appreciate knowing about the repair costs and time from your experience. It gives me a good idea of what to expect when I take it in. Was your Discovery still under warranty when this happened? Mine isn't anymore, so I'm trying to figure out my options.

Hey again! Thanks for those details about your Defender. You know, that's really interesting because my Discovery had about 95,000 km when the same thing happened, pretty close to your mileage! And just like yours, mine also died without any warning signs. No, unfortunately my Discovery wasn't under warranty anymore when this happened. I was about 8 months past the warranty period, which was a bit frustrating. But honestly, the repair cost wasn't as bad as I initially feared. I should mention though, after they fixed mine, the technician told me that sometimes these sudden failures can also be related to the SOS module's wiring harness. In my case, it was just the speaker, but they said the wiring issues usually cost a bit more, around 500-600 Euro. Might be worth asking them to check both when you take it in. Have you tried the basic stuff like disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes? Sometimes that can reset the system. It didn't work for me, but I've heard it's worked for others. Let me know what you end up finding out, I'm curious if it's the same issue I had!

Thanks for all that helpful info! It's quite a coincidence that your Discovery had almost the same mileage when this happened. I actually tried the battery disconnect trick yesterday, left it for about 20 minutes, but no luck. The system's still completely dead. I've just booked an appointment with the workshop for next week. Really hoping it's just the speaker like in your case and not the wiring harness, that price difference is pretty significant! I'll definitely ask them to check both though, following your advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and the potential costs. It's helped me feel much more prepared for what's coming. I'll update you once I get it checked out, maybe it'll help someone else with the same issue down the line!
