Dodge Avenger Trans Grinding Points to Torque Converter

Looking for input on transmission issues with my 2010 Dodge Avenger. Getting rough gear shifts and weird grinding sounds when changing gears. Both check engine and transmission lights are on. Car has 144k on the clock. My previous mechanic said it might be a torque converter failure, but given my last experience with them, I want to get some second opinions. Has anyone dealt with similar transmission problems on these models? What was the repair cost and how reliable was the fix? Running the 2.4L gas engine with auto transmission.

Had the exact same symptoms on my 2013 Dodge Journey with the 2.4L. Started with harsh shifts and grinding, followed by warning lights. The torque converter was definitely failing, diagnosed through transmission slip tests and scanner data. The lock-up clutch inside the torque converter was severely worn, causing incomplete engagement during shifts. This is a common failure point on these transmissions around 130-150k miles. Left untreated, metal particles from the deteriorating converter can contaminate the entire automatic gearbox. Required a complete torque converter replacement along with transmission fluid flush to remove metal particles. The transmission repair also included replacing the solenoids since they were likely damaged from debris. This was a major job requiring transmission removal. The fix proved reliable, transmission shifted smoothly afterward with no more grinding or warning lights. This is not a job for basic shops though, needs a transmission specialist with proper diagnostic equipment. The symptoms match exactly what I experienced, so would strongly recommend getting it checked before more damage occurs. Your mileage is right in the typical failure range for these converters. Worth noting the 2010-2013 models used similar transmission components, hence the recurring issues.

Thanks for that detailed response. My Avenger had practically identical symptoms, really helps confirm the diagnosis. Quick question, do you remember roughly what you paid for the full transmission repair job and has everything held up well since? My local transmission specialist quoted 2200€ for torque converter, solenoids and fluid work, wondering if that sounds about right. The engine surge and rough shifting have definitely gotten worse over the past week, so I need to get this sorted soon before the automatic transmission takes more damage.

Just wanted to follow up, yes, your quote of 2200€ sounds right in line with what I paid. My final bill came to 2120€ for fixing the automatic transmission torque converter lock-up clutch issue. The repair has held up perfectly for the past 8 months. No more harsh shifts, grinding, or warning lights since getting it fixed. The transmission specialist confirmed the lock-up clutch was severely worn inside the converter, which was causing all those symptoms you described. Getting it repaired was definitely worth it, the transmission now shifts as smooth as new. Catching converter failure early likely prevented more extensive transmission damage. The surge and rough shifting you mentioned are classic signs of a failing torque converter, so addressing it soon is smart. Given how similar our issues were, I think you are on the right track with the diagnosis and repair plan. The price seems fair for the work involved.

After getting all that great feedback, I went ahead and had the transmission work done last week. Found a highly-rated transmission specialist who confirmed the torque converter failure diagnosis. The lock-up clutch was completely shot, just as others described. Final bill came to 2150€ for the full repair, pretty close to the original quote. They replaced the torque converter, transmission solenoids, and did a complete fluid flush. The automatic gearbox is shifting perfectly now, no more grinding or warning lights. Really glad I got it fixed when I did. The mechanic showed me the old converter parts, the clutch material was severely worn and there were metal particles throughout the system. Could have caused major transmission damage if left unfixed. Whole job took about 3 days but the results were worth it. Car drives like new again. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences, helped me make the right call on this repair.
