Dodge Journey's Steering Control and Alignment Crisis

My Dodge Journey 2011 has become really hard to steer lately and the wheel shakes quite a bit. The power steering feels off and I suspect a faulty steering sensor might be the issue. I had a bad experience with my regular mechanic last time, so I want to make sure I know what I am talking about before going in for repairs. Anyone faced similar alignment problems or steering issues with their Journey? My car has done about 95000 km and runs on gas. Looking for advice on what to check and maybe recommendations for getting it fixed properly.

Had a similar situation with my Dodge Durango 2014. The steering angle sensor started malfunctioning, causing electronic stability issues and inconsistent power steering response. The wheel shake you describe matches what I experienced, it typically indicates either a sensor issue or wheel alignment problems. The steering angle sensor replacement was necessary in my case, as the diagnostic showed incorrect readings between the sensor and the power steering module. This sensor calibration is crucial for proper electronic stability control function. This turned out to be a serious issue requiring professional attention. The repair involved not just sensor replacement but also recalibration of the entire steering system. The shop needed specialized diagnostic equipment to properly code and calibrate the new sensor. While getting the sensor fixed, they also discovered misaligned wheels, which contributed to the irregular steering feel. A proper wheel alignment was part of the complete solution. If your Journey shows these symptoms, have a certified shop perform a full diagnostic of the steering system. They should check: Steering angle sensor functionality, Power steering fluid levels, Wheel alignment measurements, Electronic stability control system, Tie rod and ball joint condition

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am in a similar situation with my Journey right now. The symptoms match exactly what you described, especially the wheel shake and inconsistent power steering. Could you remember roughly how much you paid for the automotive sensor replacement and alignment work? Also, did any other steering-related issues come up since the repair was done? I want to get a sense of the costs involved and make sure I address everything while the car is at the shop. The angle sensor seems to be the main culprit but I want to be thorough when I take it in.

Since having my Dodge fixed, the steering problems completely cleared up. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed a faulty steering angle sensor causing those stability issues. The repair focused on recoding the sensor rather than replacing it, total cost came to 195€ for the sensor calibration work. No other steering-related problems have surfaced in the months since the repair. The electronic stability control now works perfectly and the wheel shake is completely gone. Getting the steering column sensor properly coded made a huge difference in how the car handles. The diagnostic equipment they used was able to pinpoint the steering sensor malfunction, saving money by avoiding unnecessary parts replacement. If your Journey shows the same symptoms, the angle sensor coding might be all you need rather than a full sensor replacement. Worth noting that while the steering angle sensor was the main issue, having them check the entire steering system during the repair is always smart preventive maintenance.

I took my Journey to a certified shop last week. The mechanic ran diagnostics and confirmed the traction control and steering angle sensor needed attention. Total repair cost was 380€, more than expected but included full sensor replacement since recoding alone wasnt enough in my case. They also found worn tie rods during inspection which explained some of the shakiness. Getting those replaced added to the cost but the steering feels completely solid now. No more vibration or inconsistent power steering response. The whole repair took about 4 hours. Money well spent since the car handles like new again. Having the complete steering system checked was definitely the right call, saved me from potential bigger issues down the road. The sensor failure was causing most problems but fixing everything at once made sense. Best part is not having to fight the steering wheel anymore during turns. The electronic stability control works perfectly now that the angle sensor is properly calibrated and installed.
