DS5 Hybrid Wastegate Defect

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2013 Citroen DS5 hybrid, approximately 40138 km on the odometer. I've noticed symptoms indicating a potential problem with the boost pressure system: intermittent check engine light, reduced engine power, poor engine response, occasional engine stalls at idle, and higher than usual fuel consumption. Recently, a whistling noise has emerged, evolving into a loud hissing sound during acceleration. Could a defect in the wastegate valve be the culprit?

Summary of the thread

The 2013 Citroen DS5 hybrid is experiencing issues such as an intermittent check engine light, reduced engine power, poor response, engine stalls, increased fuel consumption, and a whistling noise that turns into a loud hissing sound during acceleration. These symptoms suggest a potential defect in the wastegate valve. Inspection of intercooler pipes, throttle body, and possible vacuum leaks were recommended, but ultimately, a professional diagnosis confirmed the wastegate valve defect, leading to its replacement.

Your symptoms sound awfully familiar. I had a similar experience with my 2016 Opel Insignia, although it was a diesel. Check engine light, loss of power, and a strange whistling sound that turned into a hiss. Have you checked your intercooler pipes for any leaks or damage? It might be worth inspecting the throttle body as well. It could be a vacuum leak somewhere in the intake system.

Thank you for your insights. Regarding the intercooler pipes and throttle body, are there any specific areas I should focus on during inspection? I have a reasonable degree of mechanical aptitude, but any guidance on potential weak points or common failure locations would be greatly appreciated.

Well, on my Insignia, the rubber hoses connecting the intercooler to the metal pipes were the issue. They had perished and were leaking under pressure. Look for any signs of oil residue or cracks in the hoses. Give them a good squeeze and see if you can hear any air escaping. As for the throttle body, make sure it's clean and that the butterfly valve moves freely. But honestly, with those symptoms pointing to the wastegate and given it's a hybrid system, I'd recommend getting it professionally diagnosed. It could be more complicated than just a simple leak.

I appreciate your detailed response and cautionary advice. Given the potential complexity of the hybrid system and the increasing severity of the symptoms, I have decided to take the vehicle to a certified Citroen mechanic for a thorough diagnosis. After inspection it was indeed a defective wastegate valve, the repair cost me 860€. Thank you again for your time and expertise.
