E Klasse rough ride Damping adjustment fault
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Mercedes E Klasse is experiencing a rough ride due to a "damping adjustment fault" warning. The issue is likely related to a suspension problem, possibly a faulty shock absorber or an electrical connection issue. It is suggested to inspect the cable and plug connection to the shock absorber, as a damaged connection can cause suspension failure and trigger the error. The problem was resolved by repairing a defective plug connection, restoring ride comfort.

Thanks! Where exactly should I be looking for this cable and plug connection? Is it easy to get to, or do I need to take things apart? And the error is pretty generic, just says 'damping adjustment fault'.

Okay, generic damping fault points more towards the electrical connection. The plug is usually right on top of the shock absorber itself. You might need to remove the wheel to get a good look. But honestly, if you aren't comfortable poking around with the suspension, I would suggest taking it to a workshop. A damaged cable will cause suspension failure and that can get expensive fast.

Thanks a lot for the help! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. It was a defective plug connection. They repaired it for 95€. Ride comfort is back to normal now!

I had something similar happen with my E Klasse. Check the cable and plug connection to the shock absorber first. A suspension failure there can definitely cause ride comfort issues and trigger the damping control error. Is the error message specific, or just a general fault?
