EGR Valve Failure? Astra Shows Multiple Warning Signs

Thanks! My mileage is at 163189 KM, and my last service was about 2 months ago where they just did the usual oil change and filters. Before these issues started, everything was running fine. I was hoping cleaning the EGR might do the trick to save some cash, but from what you're saying, I might need to brace myself for a replacement. Did your mechanic mention how long the new EGR valve typically lasts? Just want to know what I'm getting into cost-wise. Also, did you notice any improvement in fuel economy after fixing it? Cheers for the help!

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get wanting to save money by just cleaning it, I tried that route too! From my experience with the Vectra (which shares a lot of parts with your Astra), the new EGR valve should last you around 50,000-80,000 KM if you maintain it well. My mechanic told me these parts usually start acting up around 150,000 KM, so your mileage definitely fits the pattern. And the fuel economy improvement was actually pretty noticeable! I'd say I'm saving about 15-20% on fuel costs compared to when the valve was acting up. Plus, the engine just feels more responsive overall, no more of that annoying hesitation when accelerating. Quick tip though, after getting it replaced, try to do some highway driving every now and then. It helps prevent carbon build-up in the new valve. I make sure to do at least one good motorway run every couple of weeks, and so far (about 18 months in), the new valve's working perfectly. The initial cost might sting a bit, but honestly, it's worth it for the peace of mind and improved performance. Let me know how you get on with it!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's really helpful to know about the lifespan and the highway driving tip, I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'm actually feeling a bit better about the whole situation now. The fuel savings you mentioned would definitely help offset the repair costs over time. Think I'll bite the bullet and get it replaced rather than just cleaned, especially given my mileage. Got a good mechanic in mind who's done work for me before, so I'll give him a call tomorrow to book it in. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'll definitely aim for those regular motorway runs once it's fixed to keep the new valve happy! Thanks again for all the help!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2003 Vauxhall Vectra diesel. The symptoms were exactly like what you're describing with your Astra. At first, I thought it was something minor, but when my mechanic checked it, the EGR valve was completely stuck and clogged up. My trusted local workshop cleaned it first, but it was too far gone and needed replacement. Total bill came to about 355€ including parts and labor. Since then, the car's running smooth as butter, no more stalling, shaking, or funky diesel smell. Could you share your mileage and whether you've had any other engine work done recently? This might help pinpoint if there are any related issues we should look out for. Hope this helps!
