Endeavour gear shift indicator failure

I'm having a head-scratcher with my 2006 Ford Endeavour, gasoline engine. My gear shift indicator on the dashboard is completely kaput. I can't engage any gears, and when it does decide to play along, the automatic transmission is shifting all over the place – uncleanly, I'd say. Sometimes I hear some pretty nasty grinding noises when it even attempts to shift. To top it all off, there's an error stored in the memory, and the gear selection display in the speedometer does nothing. I'm suspecting it might be the control unit, but I'm no expert. Any thoughts?

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 series. The gear selector module went bonkers, causing all sorts of transmission headaches. Was the error code you pulled related to the transmission control unit (TCU), or did it point to something else? If it's the TCU, brace yourself.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am not quite sure whether the error code was related to the transmission control unit. How did you resolve your problem and can you give me a bit more clarity on the TCU?

No worries! TCU, or Transmission Control Unit, it's basically the brain of your automatic gearbox. It uses sensors to figure out when to shift. In my case, the BMW dealership confirmed it was faulty and replaced the whole unit. If you can get the exact error code read, it'll give you a much better idea. If it's the TCU, I'd recommend taking it to a trustworthy mechanic for a proper diagnosis. Don't attempt this yourself.

Thanks a lot for your help. I will take it to my mechanic tomorrow and ask them to check the TCU and the error code in the error memory. It seems like it is indeed the defective control unit. They quoted me around 1000€ for the whole repair. Thanks again for the help!
