Engine overheating and metal shavings in the oil of Toyota Highlander 2010: Experience reports and suggested solutions wanted

Hey guys, I have a question. My 2010 Toyota Highlander (petrol engine, just under 185,000km on the clock) is currently causing problems. The 'Check Engine' light and the oil light are on, the engine is overheating, making strange noises and there are metal shavings in the oil. I think this could be a contamination of the engine oil. Have you had experiences like this before and if so, how did your mechanic solve it? I wasn't exactly happy with the garage last time. Your stories are very welcome! LG

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Toyota Highlander is experiencing engine overheating, strange noises, and metal shavings in the oil, with both the 'Check Engine' and oil lights illuminated. The problem might be due to engine oil contamination or faulty communication between the vehicle's electronic control units (ECUs). A similar issue in a Toyota RAV4 was resolved by reprogramming the ECUs and changing the oil, which eliminated the overheating and noise problems. Seeking similar solutions and experiences from others could help address the issue effectively.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I understand your situation, had something similar with my 2007 Toyota RAV4. It turned out to be sporadic faulty communication between ECUs. My check engine light and oil light were also on. The fault was rectified by reprogramming the ECUs and changing the oil as there were metal shavings in it. The noise and overheating was from the wrong information being exchanged by the ECUs. It was definitely a serious problem as the ECUs were sending incorrect signals to the engine and this was causing complications. Hope this helps you! VG.

Hello, that sounds like a really serious problem with your RAV4. I'm glad to hear that it could be solved for you. Do you remember how much you paid to get the problem fixed? And has anything else happened since then or is everything running smoothly now? Thanks for your help! LG.

Hello, yes, it was definitely no walk in the park with my RAV4. The repair costs for the sporadically faulty communication between the control units were pretty steep, I admit. It cost me €955. But hey, what are you going to do if you love your car, right? As for the engine oil contamination, since the mechanic visit it's completely fixed. No more weird noises or metal shavings. So I'd say it was worth it! Since then the box has been running like clockwork, no more problems. Hope things go just as smoothly for you! Good luck, buddy! VG.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. 955€, that sounds really hefty, but you're right, you do look after your love, don't you? That's good to know that everything went well for you afterwards and that no further problems arose. I also hope to have the same experience. Thanks for your help and advice, buddy! VG.
