Hey, that sounds really bad and reminds me of the situation with my Fabia. Did replacing the EGR valve completely fix the problem? Do you remember how much it cost and if any other things have come up since? I hope I can find a capable mechanic like you. Thanks for your help!

Hey, yes, that completely solved the problem! My Fabia has been running like a champ ever since. It's as if it had never had any problems. The repair, i.e. cleaning and replacing the EGR valve, cost me €355 at the time. It wasn't exactly cheap, but it was definitely better than a new car. Fortunately, I haven't had any further problems with the car since then. I guess I was just lucky with my mechanic. Hope you find a good guy like that! Good luck and keep your head up, you'll get there!

Thanks for the info and encouragement, that's really helpful! 355€ is a lot of money, but as you said, still cheaper than a new car. I will definitely see another mechanic now and hopefully he will be as knowledgeable as yours. If I'm lucky, it will only be the EGR valve and not the whole car will need replacing. Thanks again, your words have really encouraged me!

Hi, I can relate to what you are going through as I had a similar problem with my 2007 Skoda Octavia. The car showed the same symptoms as your Fabia. For me it wasn't a minor problem, it was quite serious. The check engine light was constantly on, the engine was running rough and would idle or sometimes even shut itself off. The strong smell of exhaust fumes and the shuddering at idle also seemed familiar. When I went to see my mechanic, he was able to diagnose the problem quite quickly. My EGR valve was actually defective. Replacing it was quite a job, but afterwards the car ran like clockwork again. So, it could well be the EGR valve in your case too. I can only advise you to go to a good mechanic and have it checked. Good luck and cheer up, you'll get it sorted!
