Engine Stalling Issue Resolved with Air Intake Cleaning

My 2018 Mercedes GLS gasoline engine is stalling at idle I scanned it and it's throwing a code related to the idle air control valve The main symptom is engine stalling at idle it just dies sometimes when I come to a stop I've tried cleaning the MAF sensor and visually inspected all the vacuum lines but I can't find any obvious leaks Could a heavily contaminated air intake really be the culprit

The symptoms you describe are indeed indicative of a malfunctioning idle air control system I had a similar experience with my previous vehicle, a Volvo V70, exhibiting comparable engine stalling issues The root cause in my case was excessive carbon buildup within the throttle body and air intake manifold This restricted airflow at idle, leading to the engine stalling Have you inspected the throttle body for deposits Such deposits can significantly impede proper engine idle

I haven't specifically pulled the throttle body for a deep clean yet, but I did spray some cleaner into it while the engine was running Maybe that wasn't aggressive enough Is it really necessary to remove the whole thing for a proper cleaning, or are there any tricks to getting it clean while it's still on the car Also, is there a way to check the air intake for contamination

While spraying cleaner into the throttle body can provide temporary relief, it rarely addresses the underlying issue of accumulated deposits A thorough cleaning typically requires removal of the throttle body to ensure all surfaces are properly addressed Regarding the air intake, a visual inspection using a bore scope may reveal the extent of contamination However, given the symptoms and error code, I would recommend consulting a qualified technician for a comprehensive diagnosis Continuing to operate the vehicle in this condition may lead to further complications I would take it to the workshop

You were spot on about the intake Took it to a trusted shop, and they confirmed the air intake was heavily contaminated They cleaned the throttle body and intake manifold, replaced the idle air control valve, and the stalling engine issue is completely gone Check engine light is off too Total cost was around 425€ Thanks a bunch for the advice
