Equus immobilizer issue
Summary of the thread
The 2004 Hyundai Equus faced an issue where the engine refused to start or started briefly before dying, with error codes indicating a problem with the immobilizer. The symptoms, including an erratic security light, suggested a potential issue with incorrect key programming. It was advised to seek professional help due to the complexity of the Equus' anti-theft system. The problem was resolved by reprogramming the key at a workshop.

Yes, the security light does seem to flash at odd times, especially when the engine fails to start. Does this confirm your suspicion about the key programming being the issue? Is there any way to resolve this without going to a workshop? I have some experience with car electronics.

Given the flashing security light and error code pointing to the immobilizer, it's highly probable the key programming is the root cause. While DIY key programming is sometimes possible, the Equus' system is complex. Incorrect attempts can lock the system completely, requiring professional intervention. I recommend visiting a workshop equipped to handle Hyundai's anti-theft systems.

I took it to a local workshop, and it turned out the key needed reprogramming. The repair cost me 45€. Everything is working as it should now.

I had a similar problem with my Equus. An immobilizer, or anti-theft system, prevents the engine from starting if the correct key signal isn't recognized. The symptoms you describe—engine not starting, starting briefly then cutting out—are typical. Does the security light behave erratically?
