Espace Automatic Transmission Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Renault Espace diesel is experiencing erratic shifting, a transmission indicator light, and sometimes feels stuck in emergency mode. The issues could be due to undervoltage or worn transmission oil. A professional check revealed that the transmission oil was worn, and after a transmission flush and hydraulic fluid replacement, the problems were resolved.

Thanks! I haven't checked the fluid level or color yet. Where do I check the transmission fluid on this model, and what color should it be? Is there a dipstick?

Checking the auto transmission fluid on mine wasn't straightforward; there's no dipstick! You need to get under the car. With those symptoms and not knowing when the fluid was last changed, I'd take it to a workshop. It could be low fluid, or the fluid might be totally shot. Better safe than sorry with these gearboxes!

You were spot on! The shop confirmed the transmission oil was worn. They did a transmission flush and replaced the hydraulic fluid. It cost 240€, but the difference is night and day. Thanks for suggesting a professional check!

That sounds rough! I had similar problems with my Espace: implausible shifting and the light. First, check the transmission fluid level and color. Is it burnt or gritty?
