Espace low tire pressure warning

I'm having a strange issue with my 2002 Renault Espace, diesel engine. The tire pressure seems too low. An error message keeps popping up in the speedometer, and a fault is stored in the error memory. I checked the tire pressure with a pressure gauge and it seems fine though, so I suspect the sensor is faulty. Mileage is at 163512 km. Any ideas?

Sounds like a TPMS issue. I had a similar problem with my old BMW 5-series. All tires visually fine, pressure normal with a regular gauge, but the car kept complaining. Did you already try checking the air valve?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the air valve specifically. What exactly should I be looking for there? Is it likely the sensor itself?

It could be the sensor, especially given the car's age; the sensor battery probably ran out. It's like a smoke detector, eventually, the battery dies. Checking the valve is just a precaution. In my case, with the BMW, it turned out to be a dead sensor, and replacing it fixed the problem. I'd advise taking it to a workshop to confirm.

Thanks, that's helpful. I took your advice and went to the workshop. As suspected, it was a faulty tire pressure sensor with an empty battery. The repair cost me 280€. Problem solved!
