Espace rough starting stalling

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2022 Renault Espace, diesel engine. It has 126460 km on the clock. Lately, it's been starting really rough, sometimes stalling at idle, and the check engine light is on. I've checked the basic stuff, but I'm not really a mechanic. Any ideas what could be wrong?

I had similar issues with my Espace. Sounds like it could be the camshaft sensor. Have you checked for any misfire codes related to the engine control? A faulty encoder wheel on the camshafts can cause those symptoms.

Misfire codes, eh? I don't have a code reader myself. Where exactly is that sensor located, and is it difficult to get to?

The camshaft sensor is located near the top of the engine. Without proper diagnostic tools, pinpointing the exact cause is tricky. Given the symptoms, I would suggest consulting a workshop. They will be able to use an OBD scanner to see what trouble codes are stored. Then they can check the sensor signals with an oscilloscope. It could save you a lot of time and potential damage.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on. Turns out the encoder wheel on the camshaft was defective, causing the camshaft sensor to send incorrect signals. The final bill came to 695€. Runs like new now!
