Estima NOx Catalyst Aging Exhaust Leak

I've got a 2012 Toyota Estima, gasoline engine, with a check engine light. Diagnostic says NOx storage catalyst aging. Also, I hear a faint exhaust leak. Could these be related? Concerned about air quality and fuel efficiency.

NOx catalyst aging on an Estima, eh? Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue. Exhaust leak too, you say? That's probably your culprit. A leak messes with the whole emissions system and will age your catalyst prematurely.

Could you elaborate on the connection between the exhaust leak and the NOx catalyst aging? Trying to understand the mechanism.

Simple. The leak throws off the air/fuel mixture and the oxygen sensors readings. The engine management system then struggles to keep the NOx catalyst at its optimal operating temperature. This causes it to degrade faster than it should. Best to get it checked at a workshop.

Thanks for clarifying the relationship. I'll book an appointment with a mechanic to address the exhaust leak and get the NOx catalyst looked at. The repair cost 265€.
