Everest knocking sound and power loss

My 2003 Ford Everest with a gasoline engine is giving me trouble at 248038 km. I'm hearing a knocking sound like bad combustion. Engine power is down, it jerks when accelerating, and there's smoke when I accelerate. I checked the error memory and found a stored error. Any ideas?

Sounds familiar. I had something similar happen with my Everest. Is it worse when the engine is cold? I'm wondering if it could be pre-ignition. Have you checked your ignition timing or looked for deposits in the combustion chamber?

Thanks! It does seem a bit worse when it's cold. How did you figure out it was pre-ignition? And what did you do about the combustion chamber deposits?

Well, the knocking sound was the giveaway for me. It really does sound like pre-ignition, especially with the reduced power and jerking. I'm no mechanic, so I took it to a workshop. They confirmed it was deposits in the combustion chamber causing the issue. They did some engine tuning which seemed to sort it out. Honestly, I think you should take it to a professional.

Thanks. I took it to a workshop as you suggested. They confirmed it was deposits in the combustion chamber, and the engine tuning cleared it up. Cost me 425€, but at least it's running smoothly again. I appreciate the help!
