Excursion torque converter issue
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Ford Excursion with a gasoline engine is experiencing issues likely related to a defective automatic transmission torque converter lock-up clutch. Symptoms include a check engine light, transmission indicator illumination, gearbox slippage, unclean shifting, and grinding noises during gear changes, with error codes stored. Interesting. The 'running in sand' analogy resonates strongly. Do you recall any specific error codes or diagnostic steps that led you to pinpoint the torque converter?

Unfortunately, I didn't personally diagnose the error codes. I brought it to a trusted workshop, and they quickly identified the torque converter as the source of the problem. Given your symptoms and error codes, I would strongly suggest a professional diagnosis to confirm the converter failure.

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate you sharing your experience. Following your advice and the workshop's diagnosis, the issue was indeed the automatic transmission converter. The repair cost came out to 2120€. All the symptoms are gone.

I had a similar issue with my Excursion. The symptoms you describe mirror my experience almost exactly. It felt like the engine was surging, especially at highway speeds. Was it like trying to run in sand?
