F Pace Hybrid: VANOS Issues Cause Engine Troubles

Thanks for the detailed response. My current mileage is 81905 KM and the last service was completed just 2 months ago with full oil change. I havent had any timing chain or inlet camshaft repairs done before. Unfortunately, I dont have access to the error codes right now, but the check engine warning started after a particularly cold morning start when the engine was running especially rough. The symptoms you described with the VANOS failure match exactly what I am experiencing, particularly the low power output and inconsistent running. Will definitely get it to the dealer since its under warranty, but its helpful to know the potential repair costs in case similar issues come up later.

Thanks for providing those additional details. The timing of your symptoms, starting after a cold morning, is very typical for VANOS failure. On my F Type, the variable timing system would struggle most during cold starts before the oil reached proper operating temperature. Since your service history is up to date and mileage relatively low, this points even more strongly toward a VANOS solenoid issue rather than timing chain wear or general inlet camshaft problems. The clean oil and recent service also rules out oil contamination as a likely cause. When my VANOS failure occurred, the repair was straightforward once properly diagnosed. The low power and rough running cleared up immediately after the solenoid replacement. While yours is covered under warranty now, its worth noting these components typically last 100000-120000 KM when properly maintained. One recommendation: when you take it in, ask them to check the electrical connectors to the VANOS solenoids as well. In some cases, corroded connections can cause similar symptoms and are a simpler fix than full solenoid replacement.

Thanks again for the insights. Will definitely mention the electrical connectors when I take it to the dealer tomorrow. Good to know this is a known issue that can be fixed relatively easily. The symptoms matching your experience, especially the cold start problems and engine misfire pattern, gives me more confidence in what to expect. Since you mentioned your repair was straightforward, that eases my mind about potential complications. While the warranty covers it now, knowing the typical 250€ cost for VANOS solenoid replacement helps me plan for future maintenance. The timing chain and general engine condition being fine is also reassuring given the regular maintenance schedule I follow. Will update once I get the actual diagnosis, but sounds like we can isolate the check engine light trigger to the VANOS system rather than something more serious. Much appreciated for sharing your repair experience, really helped narrow down the likely cause.

Having some experience working on similar models, I encountered a comparable issue with my F Type hybrid from around the same period. The symptoms you describe match what I experienced, poor fuel economy and rough running, which turned out to be related to a VANOS solenoid malfunction. The engine misfire and low power issues were quite noticeable, especially during cold starts. After initial diagnosis, my workshop found a faulty camshaft solenoid valve that was causing irregular timing control. The repair involved replacing the VANOS solenoid and clearing the fault codes, which resolved the rough running completely. Total cost was 250€ for parts and labor. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Current mileage, Service history details, When was the last oil change, Any previous timing-related repairs, Specific error codes if you have them This information would help determine if you might be dealing with related issues like oil sludge buildup, which can affect the VANOS system. Since your vehicle is under warranty, definitely have the dealer check it, but knowing these details could help identify if this is a common failure point for this model. Your symptoms strongly suggest VANOS failure, but proper diagnosis is essential before any repairs.
