Failing Belt Tensioner Causing Q2 Engine Performance Drop

Looking for advice with belt issues on my 2023 Q2. The engine performance dropped noticeably and I can hear weird noises from the belt drive system. Suspect the tensioner pulley might be failing. Already had some sketchy repair work done before, so wanting to hear experiences before picking a shop. Car has 114887km on the clock. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Main concern is to avoid getting overcharged for simple belt tensioner replacement.

Had a similar issue on my 2020 Q3 with symptoms matching yours, reduced engine performance and distinct belt drive noise. The timing belt tensioner was indeed failing, causing incorrect belt tension. This affected multiple components in the belt drive system, including the idler pulley. Initial diagnosis revealed the tensioner pulley had worn bearings, creating the noise and causing improper belt tracking. This is a serious issue since a failed tensioner can lead to complete belt failure, potentially causing severe engine damage. The repair required replacing: Belt tensioner assembly, Idler pulley, Drive belt, Belt alignment check The engine noise disappeared immediately after repair, and engine performance returned to normal. While the tensioner might seem like a simple part, its failure can cascade into bigger problems if not addressed promptly. Worth noting the repair should include inspection of related components, as worn tensioners often impact other parts of the belt drive system. Make sure any shop provides a complete assessment of the entire belt drive assembly before starting work.

Thanks for sharing your experience. This actually lines up perfectly with what I was worried about with my Q2 tensioner issues. The engine noise and performance problems seem identical. Did you remember roughly how much the full repair ended up costing? And have you had any other belt drive system problems since getting it fixed? Just trying to budget properly and make sure I address everything while its in the shop. What you mentioned about checking related components makes a lot of sense. With my timing belt setup, I definitely want to avoid having to go back in for additional repairs later.

After getting the bad belt tensioner fixed at the shop, I have zero complaints. The repair bill came to 455 Euro for the complete tensioner pulley replacement and service. This included fixing the defective belt tensioner and checking all related components in the belt drive system. Since the repair, my engine performance has returned to normal and that annoying belt squeal is completely gone. The mechanic did a thorough job inspecting the entire timing belt assembly while they had it open, which gave me peace of mind. No additional belt drive issues have popped up in the months since. The investment was worth it to prevent more serious problems down the line. A failing tensioner pulley can lead to much costlier repairs if left unchecked. Getting everything properly aligned and tensioned by a professional was definitely the right call.

Thanks for the helpful advice. Finally got my Q2 fixed last week and wanted to share how it went. The automobile maintenance turned out exactly as discussed, worn tensioner causing the engine noise and performance issues. Took it to a certified shop that specializes in belt drive systems. They found the belt tensioner was completely shot and the idler pulley showed signs of wear too. Total bill came to 480 Euro for replacing both parts plus labor. A bit more than expected but they did a thorough job. The engine performance is back to normal and that worrying noise is completely gone. Really glad I got it sorted before anything major failed. The mechanic showed me the old parts and explained everything clearly. No more sketchy repairs for me, learned my lesson about going to proper shops for this kind of work. Thanks again for helping me avoid getting overcharged while still getting quality work done.
