Fiat 124 NOx Catalyst Exhaust Leak
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Fiat 124 owner experienced a check engine light and suspected NOx storage catalyst aging, accompanied by an exhaust leak near the catalytic converter and mid-pipe connection. The exhaust leak was identified as a potential cause for incorrect NOx readings, as it introduces extra oxygen affecting the catalytic converter's efficiency. After repairing the leak, the error code was cleared, and the system functioned normally, indicating the leak was the primary issue rather than the catalyst itself.

The leak appears to be originating near the connection between the catalytic converter and the mid-pipe. Could a relatively small leak there really cause the NOx catalyst to appear aged or non-functional to the ECU?

Absolutely. Even a small leak introduces extra oxygen that messes with the catalytic converter's efficiency. The sensors pick that up and can flag the NOx catalyst as the problem, even if the catalyst itself is still okay. It's basically reporting an out-of-spec reading. You're best bet is to get that leak sorted and see if the code clears. If not, then you can start worrying about the catalyst itself. Otherwise it's off to the workshop with it.

I addressed the exhaust leak. After repairing it, the error code was cleared, and the system is now functioning as expected. The total cost for the repair was 265€.

Yeah, I've seen similar on other cars. Exhaust leak will definitely throw off the NOx readings. How bad is the leak? Can you pinpoint where it's coming from?
